meilanadigsthese Hearing Chad's trio with Chris Haney and Dave Weinstock was one of my first introductions to tenor trio, and it's been a huge inspiration to me! For me there are no skips. I love the obstinato on 'I've got you under my skin' and the collabs with another huge Inso Eddie Bayard on tenor with 'Fancy Free' and of course one of the best Sam Rivers tunes 'Cyclic Episode'. I own this on cd but its great to have it on here now.

about

Filigree, Pillars, and Swing; Chad Eby

Brevity is not my strength. Choosing (just) one thing to say about Chad Eby is like choosing (just) one apple from an organic orchard in full bloom. By the same token, the embarrassment of riches makes choice easy, as the consumption of any apple is redeeming to one’s health.

Some musicians live in otherwise disarray when not on the bandstand – (lives all a-tumble with fray, turmoil and confusion). There is a sweet-spot that occurs when the charming sum total of their tangled strands (strengths and weaknesses) are pulled together in perfect equation to sustain genius in performance. They are like filigree on a building’s architecture; lavish, thrilling and occasionally precariously poised.

With Eby, however, there is no mess. While his performances have filigree in aplomb (replete with flights of calligraphic wit), he is (to ride the metaphor of architecture further) like a pillar that supports the beauty of a structure. He is classically solid in all aspects of life AND performance. He exudes a respect and thorough study, comprehension, and presentation of foundation in all that he does. He is THE consummate go-to guy when you want anything done that will last. Performer (front man or group), composer, arranger, band leader, educator, family man, friend, confidante, unvarnished and direct advisor, comedian, supporter… it’s all there; Solid.

(Said simply) - are YOU hungry for swing that engages your feet, your soul, AND your intellect? Then follow this man! “Triptych” or anything else that Eby graces with his thumbprint will provide an orchard of lavish depth… filigree, pillars, and swing.
